I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANSWERED THE PHONE

V

When the phone rang and rang, I knew I shouldn't answer it. But curiosity won out!!

    "Hello, Annie. Its me ...Carmine."

I asked about her visit with her children in California; it was fine of course. Then she said she had been talking with Beanie about our adventure in Alaska (What?! Obviously Beanie has blocked out that she was such a big baby about getting on a plane, she had to be RESCUED!!)

Then Carmine said gleefully, " I have just the trip for you, Annie. A TREASURE HUNT."

"Carmine, I have  only been home a week from Alaska & I'm not antsy to make another trip so soon"

"Well, Annie, the treasure is MARIO MENDOZA!! I want to, I need to ...find him...and say hello if he is still alive."

Oh my goodness!! I do remember her boyfriend, Mario, a sailor from South America who was in US Navy during the Korean War. He was stationed in Millington (near Memphis), when they met at a church party for sailors.  They dated awhile. until he was sent elsewhere...Where? Korea, I guess.

Carmine continues. "Of course Jimmy was the love of my life & when he died, I thought life was over for me.  But Jimmy and I grew old together. Yesterday I thought of Mario.  If Mario is still alive just to have a cup of coffee with him in Argentina would be glorious!! I would feel young again for just a little while." She sang, "south of the border down Argentine way"(It was Mexico way...but never mind.)

Then she dropped the bomb. "Come on, Annie, dig into your monopoly money and take Beanie and me to South American to find Mario.

BEANIE??? Not Beanie too!! I love her so much...but it is too soon.
"Well, get on over here. Not promising but I'm willing to talk about it.  Maybe we could get (my husband) Ben to come with us; so we would have one sane person, not to mention linguist, along. We'll see, we'll see.
More later

  2. Since I omitted the ever so short first entry and started with the phone call, I will explain Carmine & Beanie were Humes High School friends of mine, who graduated in 1951. Both widows. and both fictictious. YET I LOVE THEM!! AB
